The China Study/ Campbell & Campbell BOOK OF THE MONTH
The China Study is the most comprehensive medical study ever to be undertaken to show the link between diet and chronic disease such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The basic findings of this study indicated that a plant-based diet is far healthier, and that, for optimum health, we all need to cut right down on animal proteins such as those found in eggs, dairy products like cheese and milk, and flesh products like meat and fish. By doing this we not only drastically cut our risk of serious chronic disease, but we are able to increase our chance of recovery should we already be in a diseased state. No other nutrition/diet book has the same heavy-weight scientific clout as this one, which makes it a must-read for those with or wanting to prevent the risk of chronic diseases.

Acid & Alkaline / Herman Aihara
Maintaining an alkaline balance in our bodies is important for health and in this book, Aihara outlines how different foods have alkaline, acid or neutral effects in the body once they have been digested, something that isn't always obvious from their initial state. For example, lemons are an extremely acid fruit, whereas once they have been digested they leave an alkaline ash in the body. This is one important aspect of diet that is often overlooked by most nutritionists.

Prescription for Dietary Wellness / Balch & Balch
The Balchs new book is set to become as successful as their other book below. Dietary Wellness focuses on treating diseases using specific diets. The book includes charts with warning signs of disease and nutrient deficiency, and highly nutritious recipes. It is a shame that the book suffers from poor editing.

Prescription for Nutrional Healing / Balch & Balch
This is one of the leading guides to natural health. Indexed like a home medical encyclopaedia, instead of outlining normal orthodox treatments, this highly informative and best selling book gives natural treatments using nutritional supplements and herbal remedies. Highly recommended.

Lifesmart / Carole Caplin
Carole Caplin is an experienced nutritionist and lifestyle expert with twenty years of experience helping men and women achive optimum health. In the UK is she famous for having been alternative health advisor to the Blairs and for campaigning against a proposed restriction on health supplements. Unlike many other celebrity health "experts", however, Caplin really does know her stuff and her practical book is certainly the best in the "live well, feel good and look great" category that we have come across for a while.

Racketeering in Medicine / James Carter
Any doctor who tries to buck the medical establishment is a brave person, and Dr. James Carter is no exception. In this well researched book Carter presents hard evidence and specific facts showing how the orthodox medical establishment are systematically crushing effective alternative therapies using their economic clout to launch campaigns of harassment, trumped-up charges and outright amoral behaviour.

Milk: The Deadly Poison / Robert Cohen
"Drink up your milk if you want to be strong and healthy" or "drink milk if you want strong bones". We have all heard this rubbish at some point in our lives but, as Cohen points out in this great book, milk is actually a toxic substance which can produce an array of ailments in humans. It also contains growth hormones that have been shown to stimulate cancer cells. If you want to be healthy, stopping drinking milk may be one of the most important things that you can do.

  Conscious Eating / Gabriel Cousens
Gabriel Cousens is a doctor who runs the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in the United States, and this book is the culmination of his experience and experimentation with various diets. The book contains a great deal of useful information, especially on vegetarianism, although the raw food aspect of the book might be too drastic for most people, especially those living in cold countries.

Healing Beyond The Body / Larry Dossey
Dosseys is a medical doctor who has been involved with alterative medicine since the 70s, when his hard-headed scientific side was forced to acknowledge by his experiences that there was more to the body than just mechanics and chemistry. In this book Dossey explains how the meaning that a person assigns to his or her illness is an essential component in whether and how soon he or she recovers. From here, Dossey goes on to explore the power of the mind over the body and how the mind even survives the death of the body. This is an inspiring book.
The Hundred Year Lie / Randall Fitzgerald
Have you ever wondered why, just 100 years ago, cancer was only the tenth leading cause of death in the US, representing only 3% of deaths, whereas today it is 20%? Diabetes, asthma and many other diseases were all orders of magnitude less prevalent. What caused this problem? Fitzgerald traces the rise in ill-health with the development of the chemical industry, modern agriculture, modern food processing and production, and the pharmaceutical industries, all which have filled our bodies with toxins whilst stripping the nutrients from our diets. And by supporting these industries, our governments have betrayed us.

Vibrational Medicine / Richard Gerber
This is the classic bestseller that firmly establishes the existence of the body's subtle energetic systems. Gerber provides an encyclopaedic treatment of energetic healing, covering subtle-energy fields, acupuncture, Bach flower remedies, homeopathy, radionics, crystal healing, electrotherapy, radiology, chakras, meditation, and psychic healing. He also describes a new holistic paradigm that helps us to conceptually understand the common ground between all these different therapies. Highly recommended.

  Living Proof / Michael Gearin-Tosh
Gearin-Tosh discovered that he had bone marrow cancer when he was 54. This is the story of his quest to manage and overcome his illness and his determination not to be coerced by specialists, the NHS and even colleagues into joining programmes of invasive treatments. This is not a "how-to" book, rather an account of one man's quest to listen to his own inner voice of intuition rather than assuming that doctors know best.

The Gerson Therapy / Charlotte Gerson & Morton Walker
This is an uptodate and accessible account of one of the first alternative cancer therapies that has been used with some success for over 60 years. By consuming large quantities of specific vegetable and fruit juices, we are able to change our body's chemistry and increasing our chance of recovery. This book is not only for cancer sufferers, but also for people with conditions such as AIDS, hepatitis, emphysema and fibromyalgia.

Chemotherapy Heals Cancer and the World is Flat / Lothar Hireise
Cancer is one of the most feared diseases in modern society, regarded by most as a death sentence. This is a remarkable book by Lothar Hirneise, an authoritative cancer specialist who has traveled the world in search of successful methods of treatment. The fact that he is not a doctor has kept his mind open enough to make an important discovery: anyone can find a solution to cancer… but brazen confidence is an essential precondition. If you or a loved one have cancer, READ THIS BOOK. Also, have a look at the 2003 interview with Hireise published here. This book is only just available in English.

The New Optimum Nutrition Bible / Patrick Holford
Patrick Holford always writes excellent and comprehensive nutritional books, but this one has to be his best. He calls it the "Bible" and that is exactly what it is, covering all the essentials including necessary food supplements, effective dieting and weight-loss, the truth about fats, the myth of the "well-balanced diet", good digestion and lifestyles that minimize the risk of degenerative diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and arthritis. What I like about this book is that it keeps its feet on the ground without becoming too alternative (like, for example, Gabriel Cousins). Very readable and informative.

Your Health at Risk / Toni Jeffreys
A no nonsense guide to all aspects of alternative health from GM food, cholesteral and vaccinations to mercury fillings, margarine and antibiotics. This highly informative book, by a health jounalist in New Zealand, represents 20 years of her research into health — both orthodox and unorthodox. I am surprised that this book is not more widely available. (ISBN 0 7225 3925 8)

The Medical Mafia / Guylaine Lanctot
Lanctot went to court over this fantastic book because the medical establishment that she takes to task were unhappy at a mutineer in their ranks. During the trial she told her accusers, "I am a free physician." and with that simply walked out. Freedom is the message in her book: we should all be free to follow the treatments that we feel are right for us. What is sad about brilliant anti-establishment books like this one is that they all seem to go out of print very quickly despite huge popularity… I wonder why?

Hope's Edge / Frances Moore Lappe
Frances Lappe, in her groundbreaking book Diet for a Small Planet published thirty years ago, was one of the first to promote changes in eating habits as one of the keys to healing the planet. In this book she presents updated information that includes genetically engineered foods, worldwide famine and the growth of obesity in Western countries. She also introduces us to pioneers in different parts of the world who have transformed their lives and their communities into veritable Edens.

Eat Your Heart Out / Felicity Lawrence
This is the story of how a handful of American global corporations managed to gain a stranglehold on the modern food supply system, and in the process gave them the power to determin, based on the maximum profit they could make, what hundreds of millions of people around the world eat every day. The result is a mass food industry that is not only bad for the planet but bad for our health too. Lawrence's previous book was the bestseller Not on The Label, and with this one she looks further into an industry that is slowly destroying public health and the environment. This book highlights the importance of our dietary choices.

The Heart of Listening / Hugh Milne
This is an unusual book to be recommending because it is about cranial sacral therapy and will mostly have been read by practitioners. However, Volume 1 illustrated on the left has some very interesting pertinent information for non-therapists as well. It is a book about learning to listen without preconceptions, opening ourselves up to the rhythm of another. Look at this book first before you buy it because it won't suit everyone.

Cancer Is Not A Disease! / Andreas Moritz
This book will turn your view of cancer on its head. Rather than the perspective that it is a terrible life-threatening disease, Moritz asserts that most cancer is actually a survival mechanism used by the body when the internal cellular environment turns toxic from poor lifestyle choices. Without it, we would die much more quickly. A tumour actually acts as a secondary liver. What is so great about this book is how empowering it is: rather than having cancer and disease in general as the mortal enemy, diseases are seen from a naturopathic point of view as true helpers on our journey to wholeness.

Healing with Whole Foods / Paul Pitchford
This is a book about diet and food from the perspective of Chinese medicine (it is quite macrobiotic in flavour). Pitchford puts forward different food recommendations for different conditions, and explains from a yin/yang energetic perspective why certain foods should be avoided for certain people. This is certainly a very practical book and well-indexed book and it has many recipe recommendations as well. Highly recommended.
Diet For A New America / John Robbins
A fantastic book, similar to The Silent Ark above, that focuses on the health aspects of our current meat-cantered culture. Robbins goes into detail on how excess meat in the diet is one of the leading causes in everything from heart disease to food poisoning, and he backs up his claims with substantial amounts of research and documentation. He also shows just how environmentally unsound a meat industry is, and how it spreads, through its PR campaigns, untruths about the value of meat in the diet

The Food Revolution / John Robbins
This book, in a way that few others do, really does show how the simple choices of what we eat and how we live can have huge global consequences. Robbins examines the terrible cruelty and mendacity of the meat production industry and its devastating consequences to human health. He also blows holes in modern fad diets like the Atkins Diet that are decidedly dangerous. Genetically modified foods are of particular concern to Robbins who makes the disturbing claim that two-thirds of all foods in the US are now genetically modified. The book ends on a positive note of hope. Excellent reading!

Fast Food Nation / Eric Schlosser
Fast food nation is not only a strong critique of the fast food industry, but it presents this industry as the capitalism and self-interest taken to the extreme. One in four Americans will visit a fast-food restaurant on any given day and, for a huge percentage, working in these sorts of outlets for extremely low wages was their first job. Schlosser however shows that the major corporations' economic clout and desire to homogenize the food has had an extremely deleterious effect on the landscape, society and its workforce. This is a must read for everybody.

Saying No to Vaccines / Sherri Tenpenny
Just how dangerous are vaccines? Read this guide by Dr. Tenpenny to find out. It shines a light on the 25 most common misconceptions about vaccines and addresses problems with vaccines in all age groups. Many of us are aware of the dangers of vaccines to children, but this book shows that they can severely injure adults as well. And with the escalating number of vaccine requirements and the possibility of enforced national vaccination in the face of pandemics like the swine flu, this danger to society, fuelled by the greed of the pharmaceutical industry, only increase. What can you do to protect yourself and your family from vaccines? Read this very informative guide.

Dirty Medicine / Martin J. Walker
Few would have the courage or the tenaciousness, as Walker has, to single-handedly take on the entire pharmaceutical industry in this expose of its immoral, deceitful, corrupt and greedy practices. You won't find Dirty Medicine in many bookshops because the industry has fought so hard in trying to get it banned. The orthodox medical industry has and continues to wage a war of dirty tricks, industrial sabotage and character assassination on alternative and complementary therapies and practitioners, hiding behind the façade of well-known health research associations and orthodox medical titles.
